Balgarianovinite.com Cabinet members laid wreaths and flowers in memory of the victims of the Belene forced labour camp on the occasion of the 77th anniversary of its establishment, the Environment Ministry’s press centre said on Monday.
Tributes were paid at the so-called Second Site on Persin Island on the initiative of caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Andrey Yankulov and caretaker Environment Minister Julian Popov. The ceremony was also attended by caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, caretaker Finance Minister Georgi Klisurski, Chef de Cabinet Rumiana Bachvarova, representatives of the regional administration in Pleven, as well as the leadership of Belene Municipality.
The Belene camp, established on April 27, 1949, was the largest and longest-running facility for the internment of opponents of the communist regime in Bulgaria. It existed, with interruptions, until 1987.
Those present stressed that historical memory requires a unified effort by institutions to preserve the remembrance of the victims. They noted that work is under way to finalize the procedure for declaring the Belene camp a immovable cultural asset of national significance.
The aim is for the site to be preserved as a space for remembrance and education, and to be integrated into the natural environment of Persin Island.
