Balgarianovinite.com Around 180,000 packs of cigarettes bearing Belarusian excise stamps, packed in rolls and declared as mattresses, have been discovered in a truck at one of the ports in Burgas, Deputy District Prosecutor Manuel Manev said. The seized cigarettes are valued at over EUR 700,000, the prosecution service said.
The vehicle arrived in Bulgaria on the Druzhba ferry, operating on the ro-ro line between Batumi and Burgas. The truck driver, a Georgian national, has been detained.
The cigarettes were found on Monday during a thorough customs inspection. The detained driver will be charged with smuggling excise goods in very large quantities, Manev said. He did not specify whether authorities have information about the intended recipient, but noted that the sender is a Chinese company.
The truck had been pre-selected for inspection and instead of mattresses, customs officers found rolls of foam and foil insulation concealing hundreds of cigarette packs, said Stefan Klichanov, head of the Narcotics Trafficking Unit at the Port of Burgas. All packs carried inscriptions in Russian.
In 2021, 13 million cigarettes, or 650,000 packs worth nearly BGN 5 million, were discovered on a ferry from Georgia. At the time, authorities said the shipment had been intended for Hungary.
