Balgarianovinite.com The National Gallery will present the exhibition “Giro d’Italia: A Brief History of Italy on Two Wheels”, opening on May 5 at 5 p.m. at Kvadrat 500 in Sofia. The exhibition will remain open until July 5, the gallery said.
The project is held under the patronage of the Embassy of Italy in Bulgaria and is organized jointly by the National Gallery and the Italian Cultural Institute in Sofia. The curators are Dominique Lora, Stefania Baldinotti and Maurizio Presutti. The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) is the media partner of the initiative.
The exhibition is dedicated to the 2026 edition of the Giro d’Italia, which this year will start from Nessebar on May 8 and finish in Sofia on May 10.
The display traces the development of the bicycle as a means of transport and a cultural symbol from the late 19th century to the present day, with a focus on its role in Italian society after World War II.
Kvadrat 500 will showcase works by contemporary Italian artists such as Dario Gibaudo, Francesca Pompei, Gaia Scaramella, Corrado Zeni, Marcovinicio and Natino Chirico. The exhibition also includes cinematic footage from the Mimmo Cattarinich Foundation in Rome, vintage posters from the Collezione Salce Museum and ethnographic photographs from the Palumbo Archive at the Sigismondo Castromediano Museum in Lecce.
The exhibition presents Italy “on two wheels” as an image of modernity, dynamism and social recovery, turning the bicycle into a symbol of both individual and collective development.
The accompanying programme includes several events organized by the Italian Embassy and partner institutions, including the photography exhibition “Tour around Siena”, a concert by the Maggiolini-Jurie duo in Plovdiv, and a lecture dedicated to cycling mobility in Italy.
On May 9, a bicycle tour in Sofia involving members of the diplomatic corps will also take place to mark Europe Day, the National Gallery added.
