Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria does not dispute the right to enforce inspections, but the imposition of fines on Bulgarian road carriers in France in violation of European legislation is unacceptable, Minister of Transport and Communications Korman Ismailov said, meeting with his French counterpart Philippe Tabarot on the sidelines of an informal EU Transport Council in Cyprus, the Ministry of Transport and Communications said.
The Bulgarian side expressed serious concern over a practice of French authorities to impose fines without using the established cooperation mechanisms. “We are left with the impression that national legislation is being applied with priority over European law,” Minister Ismailov said.
The sides confirmed that an expert online meeting will be held in early May, initiated by the Bulgarian side, with the aim of finding a concrete solution. The issue has been on the agenda of Bulgarian institutions for nearly two years, with numerous meetings held and official correspondence exchanged at both bilateral and European levels, but so far there has been no real progress.
During the meeting, Minister Ismailov received assurances that each report would be examined individually and in detail, and that the French side does not discriminate against Bulgarian carriers.
The French minister said that in 2025, 2,229 Bulgarian vehicles were inspected and established violations were comparable to those of carriers from other countries.
