Balgarianovinite.com The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) announced the establishment of a National Jazz Press Club and signed a partnership agreement with the Milcho Leviev Association for Culture and Education on April 29. The event took place at midnight at Sofia’s In The Mood Jazz Club, marking International Jazz Day (April 30). It was hosted by the venue’s representatives Natali Neykova and Vasil Karkelanov, as part of the “Jazz at Midnight” programme featuring Vicky Almazidou, Antoni Donchev and Vasil Hadjigrudev.
The jazz press club is BTA’s 46th press club, and the third mobile one, following the book press clubs held during book fairs and the one aboard the Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii during its voyages to and from Antarctica.
BTA Director General Kiril Valchev said that in recent years the national news agency has systematically supported numerous festivals in Bulgaria, including jazz and jazz-influenced events, by promoting them not only domestically but also internationally through its English-language service.
Valchev noted that BTA has begun covering festivals in far greater depth and on a daily basis, with preview materials, profiles of musicians and their messages, and full coverage of concerts through to their conclusion. According to him, when reporting on festivals, BTA seeks to set an example for other Bulgarian media by naming organizers and supporters, as this is not advertising but “another way of supporting Bulgarian culture”.
“BTA stands ready to provide news content that can be freely used by all media outlets for even more festivals, as this is also a small contribution by the Bulgarian state in supporting such events through their promotion,” Valchev added.
The Milcho Leviev Association announced the 3rd Milcho Leviev National Music Competition, also supported by the Municipality of Plovdiv and the Dobrin Petkov National School of Music and Dance Arts. It will take place from June 29 to July 3 and is aimed at Bulgarian pianists aged 10 to 25, divided into two main categories.
This is a project that encompasses many aspects related to renowned Bulgarian composer and jazz pianist Milcho Leviev (1937-2019), said singer Vicky Almazidou.
Valchev noted that Leviev’s name appeared in BTA’s news as early as 1962, when he conducted the Bulgarian Radio and Television Variety Orchestra in Helsinki and Moscow. He also featured in reports from 1965 and 1967, before leaving Bulgaria in 1970, reappearing in coverage in 1980 and 1981 during the International Jazz Meetings in Sofia, and then returning permanently to the news after 1991, when he took part in the Varna Summer International Music Festival.
“In confirmation of the words of George Gershwin… life is very much like jazz—it is best when you improvise. But most importantly, with its mobile National Jazz Press Club, BTA gives people the opportunity to immerse themselves in jazz with the help of its coverage of jazz festivals and concerts in Bulgaria,” Valchev added.
Among the guests attending the signing were the Director General of the National Radio, Milen Mitev, and National Television journalist Boyko Vassilev.
