Balgarianovinite.com The German dance group Syrtos from Karlsruhe, Germany, will participate in the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival, which will take place in Munich from May 15 to 17.
Boris Borisov, a Syrtos dancer, presented to BTA the group’s dance for the festival, Sevdo, Sevdo. Borisov explained that the choreography belongs to Prof. Nikolay Tsvetkov and is set to music by Petyo Krastev. Three folk dances from Southern Bulgaria are interwoven in the dance, which bears the name of the song of the first dance. The adaptation of the choreography to the festival’s theme was carried out by the Syrtos dance ensemble itself.
Responding to what message they wanted to convey to the audience through this dance, Borisov replied, “love is both fragile and strong, inspiring and dramatic, tender and difficult, but always deeply human and unique. Let it be the feeling that guides us throughout our entire life’s journey.”
According to Borisov, every Monday the group works hard for several hours on the new choreography they will present at the Munich festival.
“The group’s membership is diverse and enjoys participation and interest not only from the Bulgarian community in Karlsruhe. About 30 passionate enthusiasts of Bulgarian folklore, aged between 20 and 60, dance in the group, some of whom are students in Karlsruhe and the surrounding region,” he said.
“The Syrtos dance group was founded around 1988 out of an open folk community in Karlsruhe that had existed since 1975, when some of its members began to take a greater interest in dances from the Balkans. With the help of choreographers from Bulgaria, stage dances were learned and authentic folk costumes from the respective regions were purchased. The first major stage performance took place in 1989 at the traditional costume festival in Karlsruhe, in which the group subsequently participated regularly. Over time, it has grown and expanded its repertoire,” Borisov added.
According to him, nowadays Syrtos is one of the German groups that performs entirely Bulgarian choreographies at professional level.
The Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival is organized by and for amateur folklore ensembles performing outside Bulgaria. The initiative was launched by the Ot Izvora group in Lyon, France, which hosted both the first edition in 2015 and the tenth edition in 2025. More than 100 dance ensembles and over 4,000 guests are expected at the 11th edition in Munich in May. The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) is the official media partner of the event and will present all participants.
