Balgarianovinite.com A team of geologists and engineers on Saturday inspected a section of a third-class road (III-8641) between Smolyan and Pamporovo, affected by a massive landslide, Marin Kushev, director of the regional road authority in Smolyan, told BTA. They assessed the possibility of taking measures for temporary stabilization and construction of a bypass road to restore traffic until a permanent solution is designed.
The working group also included Sofia-based engineer Kalin Kalchev, who, together with representatives of the road maintenance company and the regional road authority, conducted an on-site inspection.
“We reviewed all options in the area. At this stage, the only feasible one is an existing road that passes above the landslide zone,” Kushev said.
He added that affected properties will be inspected and possibilities will be analyzed for widening the route and creating passing points so it can temporarily accommodate traffic. According to him, it will become clear at the beginning of next week whether this route can be used as a temporary bypass road.
“Our hope is that this option proves feasible, as it would be the fastest way to restore traffic, albeit under a temporary arrangement and with some difficulties,” added Kushev. Preliminary observations by specialists indicate that the terrain is in relatively good condition, with no visible signs of active deformation, but a final assessment is still pending. The estimated length of the potential temporary road is about one and a half kilometers.
During the inspection, the possibility of an alternative route from below the landslide, along a forest road, was also considered, but it has likewise been affected by the displaced earth masses and cannot be used at this stage.
According to experts, the landslide is extensive and affects a large area, which further complicates the implementation of quick solutions. Work on analyzing options to restore traffic continues.
