Balgarianovinite.com Sevlievo Municipality has the highest number of cyclists per capita, the press centre of Sevlievo Municipality told BTA on Tuesday.
“Sevlievo is establishing its position as one of the leading centres for the development of cycling in Bulgaria through investments in infrastructure, an active sports calendar and a strong club presence,” the Municipality said. A total of 7 kilometres of bike paths have been built in the town and a new 1 kilometre route is currently being implemented with the prospect of connecting to a common network. The region also offers various opportunities for mountain biking with over 10 developed routes of varying difficulty in the Pre-Balkan and Stara Planina Mountains.
A significant emphasis in the development of the sport is the construction of the Sevlievo Bike Park, the first of its kind in Bulgaria, implemented in partnership with international experts. The park includes an asphalt pump track, a children’s training ground, as well as specialized areas with varying degrees of difficulty for beginners and advanced cyclists. The park meets the standards for holding competitions and is free for residents to access. The implementation of new projects is also planned, including the construction of a skate park and the expansion of bicycle routes.
The Hotalich-Sevlievo cycling club is establishing itself as the largest in the country with 76 licensed competitors. The club develops several biking disciplines and reports an increased focus on the preparation of young competitors and the establishment of a training system with professional coaches in recent years, the municipal press centre pointed out.
The history of cycling in the town dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and is associated with pioneering achievements. Among them, the name of Hristo Buchekchiev stands out, considered the first Sevlievo resident to have traveled around Europe by bicycle. He covered nearly 10,000 kilometres in 79 days in 1901 – an achievement that remains a significant moment in the history of Bulgarian cycling.
