President Iotova Urges Swift Action on Budget and Judicial Reform; Vazrazhdane Warns of Debt Spiral Risk 2026

Balgarianovinite.com People need swift progress in at least two key areas – the budget and judicial reform, President Iliana Iotova said during consultations on Tuesday with representatives of Vazrazhdane as part of the procedure for handing over the first exploratory mandate to form a government.
During the talks, Vazrazhdane warned of a risk that Bulgaria could enter a debt spiral similar to that experienced by Greece. Party representative Angel Slavchev said they were “shocked” by what he described as plans by Progressive Bulgaria to set a new debt ceiling.
According to Vazrazhdane, such policies could push the country toward a path leading to state bankruptcy. Slavchev argued that discussions should be held on restoring the Bulgarian lev, which he said would be a way out of the current situation.
Slavchev noted that just over 600,000 Bulgarians had signed a petition for a referendum on the lev. A year ago, former (2017–2026) President Rumen Radev also initiated proposals for a referendum, he recalled, as well as a statement by Iotova from 2025 in which she described Radev’s call for a referendum on the adoption of the euro as very strong and noted that valuable time had been lost in informing Bulgarian citizens about the adoption of the euro, its pros and cons, and all the risks.
“We are principled and consistent, given that now, in your hands and in the hands of your predecessor, lies the presidential, executive, and legislative power – the ball is in your court to initiate a referendum on the return of the Bulgarian lev, so that you too may demonstrate your consistency,” insisted Angel Slavchev. In his words, those in power owe this to the Bulgarian people. “Now we must back up our words with action,” he urged.
The representative of Vazrazhdane also raised the issue of the debt incurred by the regular government for Ukraine. As well as the security agreement between Bulgaria and Ukraine, signed by caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov. “We believe that in a parliamentary state, a government cannot make such decisions without a resolution from the National Assembly. That is why Vazrazhdane submitted a motion to Parliament to declare the caretaker government’s decision illegitimate,” Slavchev emphasized. “We cannot take out loans to give money to Ukraine,” the political party stressed.
Another important issue for Vazrazhdane are the sanctions against Russia, which the party believes should be lifted, as they represent billions in losses for Bulgaria. This would also cause fuel prices to drop by 30-40%, and consequently, the prices of goods and food. Bulgaria has fallen victim to a policy that has brought us nothing good, the political party concluded.
Vazrazhdane will also fight for the abolition of the so-called carbon quotas that Bulgaria is obligated to pay.
The party also wants to renegotiate the terms of EU membership.
