Balgarianovinite.com The Hemus – 1896 Cycling Club in Troyan is the only cycling club in Bulgaria to have produced five winners of the Tour of Bulgaria, club president Todor Kolev told BTA on Thursday.
Kolev said that since 2022, the club’s men’s team has been the national champion, continuing a period of sustained domestic dominance over the past three decades. During this time, Hemus – 1896 has also achieved notable international success, winning competitions in Turkiye, Romania, Greece, Serbia, and the Republic of North Macedonia.
The club traces its roots back nearly 130 years, as the successor to the Burya cycling society, founded in 1896 by a group of enthusiasts. Historical records compiled by researcher Vlasi Iliev in 1943 show that Burya had around 180 members and significant capital for its time. Its activities were interrupted during the Balkan Wars and World War I, but the organization was later restored and expanded. Cycling competitions began taking place in Troyan in the early 20th century, and during the interwar period the Burya society became one of Bulgaria’s leading cycling organizations, both in terms of competitive success and membership.
Hemus – 1896 has continued this tradition of development and achievement, stressed Kolev, who has served as club president since 1999. A former long-time coach of the Bulgarian national team, he currently also holds the position of Secretary General of the Bulgarian Cycling Federation. He is involved in the organizational team supporting the Giro D’Italia in Bulgaria.
