Balgarianovinite.com Contemporary Bulgarian writers took part in a discussion titled “Literature Beyond Borders” during the Thessaloniki International Book Fair, where Bulgaria is the guest of honour this year.
The discussion focused on literature as a space beyond both geographical and inner human boundaries. Participants included Rene Karabash, author of the novel Ostainitsa, shortlisted for this year’s International Booker Prize; Teodora Dimova, author of novels including The Mothers, The Damned and I Do Not Know You; and writer and philosopher Todor Todorov, author of Hagabula.
Karabash said literature is “the truest testimony to truth” and a way of understanding “the other” in a world shaped by propaganda. “When people stop believing politicians, they start believing writers,” she noted.
According to Dimova, borders are mainly geographical because literature is “a space of the spirit”. She pointed out that themes such as violence or suffering transcend countries and cultures.
Todorov described literature as “an invitation to transcendence” and a way of overcoming one’s own limits.
The discussion was moderated by Svetlozar Zhelev, director of the National Book Centre at the National Palace of Culture. He quoted writer Kapka Kassabova, who has said that “the only good thing about borders is the possibility of crossing them” – an idea the participants agreed on.
“Literature Beyond Borders” is also the central theme of Bulgaria’s participation in this year’s fair. Organizers reported strong interest in the Bulgarian stand throughout the event.
