Balgarianovinite.com Democratic Bulgaria (DB) will insist on new rules, greater transparency and the appointment of professionals with broad public trust and proven qualities in the selection of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), and will oppose any election based solely on party arithmetic and quotas, parliamentary group Chair Nadеzhda Yordanova said on Nova TV on Saturday, as quoted by the party’s press centre.
According to her, the governing majority is already speaking about the need for new rules for the next SJC election, a position DB has been advocating for more than two years, including through concrete legislative proposals for a new mechanism.
“We have not heard any concrete explanation from the ruling parties on how they intend to implement these commitments. There were no specifics during the election campaign, from the parliamentary tribune, or from the new Minister of Justice. We are not receiving any answers,” Yordanova said.
She stressed that the problems in Bulgaria’s judiciary lie at the core of the country’s long-term political crisis. “When the centre of your pledge to Bulgarian citizens who have given you significant trust is anti-corruption, and you appoint a justice minister with no public positions on the issue, this is not serious,” she added.
Yordanova also commented on the proposed amendments to the Judicial System Act, which, according to her, are expected to be submitted on Monday by Progressive Bulgaria. “Apparently, this will not be done through the Ministry of Justice, but through their own MPs, which contradicts the original statement by Prime Minister Rumen Radev.
“The question is: who wrote these provisions, how and where? Who is the ideologue behind these changes? It must be clear where decisions are made, otherwise we have a problem with the legitimate exercise of power,” she said.
Yordanova expressed concern over the categorical refusal of Radev’s political formation to support the creation of temporary parliamentary committees. “These types of committees are a widely used parliamentary practice in all well-functioning democracies. It is precisely through such inquiry committees that dysfunctional institutions are exposed and meaningful legislative changes are proposed,” she said.
She further noted that DB did not support the formation of the current Government, calling this a sufficient indication of its quality. “Some ministers raise many questions. In addition, how was the head of the prime minister’s political cabinet, Nikolay Koprinkov, appointed? How was the acting head of the State Agency for National Security [Stancho Stanev] appointed? There is no convincing argument for why people with such profiles are placed in these positions and what is being pursued,” she said.
According to Yordanova, when such appointments are made, strong arguments and clear answers to public concerns are required, adding that internal party or administrative explanations are not convincing.
She also described as scandalous the behaviour of Deputy Prime Minister Ivo Hristov, who suggested that voters of Democratic Bulgaria do not need representation and that their ideas were of “outdated relevance”. “This behaviour shows that when too much power is concentrated in one place, the risks of deviation appear immediately,” she said.
Yordanova concluded that the new Government came in with an ambitious agenda to dismantle the “captured state”, tackle oligarchic influence and control prices, but stressed that citizens cannot afford to wait indefinitely. “Success of the Government would be success for Bulgaria. But we will not provide them with comfortable silence – on the contrary, we will be a constructive and strong opposition,” she said.
