Balgarianovinite.com The first Bulgarian folk dance club in Malta, Balkansko Sartse, will present Northern Bulgarian dance at the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival, which will take place in Munich from May 15 to 17.
“Our performance is a dance from the Northern folklore region called ‘Severnyashki Zadyavki’. We created it especially in connection with the theme of the gathering and our love for the fast rhythms of Northern Bulgarian folklore,” artistic director Violeta Lalova and club director Nikola Lalov told BTA.
“The choreography is by the head of Balkansko Sartse, Violeta Lalova, a choreographer and teacher who holds a bachelor’s degree from the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv. The music is a compilation by Krum Parvanov featuring various folk dances, including Paidushko, Vlach Gypsy Dance, Gamzovyana and Furla/Izruchanka,” representatives of Balkansko Sartse said.
Lalova added that festival preparations required the group to increase the number of rehearsals. “We are a group of dancers of all ages. The ensemble travelling to Munich includes performers aged from seven to 40. We are all enchanted by Bulgarian folklore and are all Bulgarians, but some of our dancers were born in Malta and our dance group is one of their links to Bulgarian culture,” she added.
‘The group was created in 2017 out of the desire of many people to dance Bulgarian folk dances in Malta. At that time we were quite a large group. However, Malta is a small island and many dancers moved to other countries, so our current ensemble is entirely renewed,” she said.
The travelling festival Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance is organized by and for amateur folklore ensembles performing outside Bulgaria. The initiative was launched by the Ot Izvora group in Lyon, France, which hosted both the first edition in 2015 and the tenth edition in 2025. More than 100 dance ensembles and over 4,000 guests are expected at the 11th edition in Munich in May. The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) is the official media partner of the event and will present all participants.
