Balgarianovinite.com Fine particulate matter levels in 2025 were higher than a year earlier, Minister of Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova-Blagova said in Burgas on Thursday. Karamfilova-Blagova was speaking on the sidelines of a forum on upgrading the national air quality monitoring system.
Karamfilova-Blagova identified household heating with solid fuels as the main driver of elevated fine particulate matter levels.
Karamfilova-Blagova said fixed monitoring stations will be upgraded.
Mobile stations are key tools for monitoring and enforcement. In emergencies and in response to pollution alerts, the fastest and most appropriate action by the competent authorities is to deploy mobile automated stations to measure ambient air quality, Karamfilova-Blagova said. She added that the equipment presented at the forum was state of the art and calibrated in line with the reference methods set by the European Commission.
One of the six stations is in permanent operation at the regional laboratory in Burgas. It has been specially upgraded with equipment to measure specific indicators, substances typical of industrial pollution sources. The move followed numerous reports from residents of choking odours in the area. Karamfilova-Blagova said no equipment can directly measure odours, but the new devices will allow a wide range of organic compounds to be tracked.
On overall ambient air quality in the country, Karamfilova-Blagova said Bulgaria had made significant progress but much work remains. She identified stronger enforcement and greater expert capacity as priorities. “No political, economic or personal dependencies among expert staff will be allowed,” Karamfilova-Blagova said.
On water supply, Karamfilova-Blagova said that, on instructions from Prime Minister Rumen Radev and together with Regional Development and Public Works Minister Ivan Shishkov, she was preparing an analysis of the state of dams and preventive measures to avert a repeat of last year’s water supply crisis in Pleven Region. The 52 significant dams managed by the ministry are now around 80% full on average, while those used for drinking water are more than 88% full.
She said the first measure would be clear coordination between the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and the Ministry of Energy in allocating water volumes, with drinking water needs remaining the top priority.
In Burgas, Karamfilova-Blagova opened a forum on improving ambient air quality monitoring at the national level. The forum was also attended by Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov and Executive Environment Agency (ExEA) Acting Executive Director Rosalina Indzhieva. The event is part of the project Improving Ambient Air Quality Monitoring at National Level under the Environment Programme 2021-2027, implemented by ExEA.
