Balgarianovinite.com Greek farmers and livestock breeders from the Serres region in northern Greece are preparing to rally on Friday morning that may result in a blockade of the Kulata – Promachonas border crossing, Voria.gr reported on May 8. According to a social media post by one of the farmers, the campaign aims to raise awareness of problems such as unpaid production, increased costs and lack of substantial support, all of which forces many farmers to operate on credit.
The protesters will gather at the village of Lefkonas at 10 a.m., then head to the Bulgarian border. They specified that an actual blockade may also not take place, as they may also choose to limit their protest to more symbolic actions or to blocking only heavy-duty trucks.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that the protest could lead to temporary traffic disruptions or the symbolic closure of certain road sections in the area of the border crossing. At this time, a prolonged and complete blockade of border traffic is not expected, but temporary traffic disruptions around noon on May 15 cannot be ruled out. The Ministry advises citizens residing in or planning to travel to Greece to take into account the announced plans for protests, including allowing extra time for travel through the Kulata – Promachonas border crossing, especially around noon.
