Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria’s young wrestlers excelled at the European Cadet Championships in Samokov, the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation (BWF) said on Monday. United World Wrestling (UWW) also gave the federation high marks for organizing and hosting the championship.
Bulgaria won another gold and a silver on the final day of the championships, as the country’s young wrestlers underscored Bulgarian wrestling’s rise. Georgi Markov Jr won the Greco-Roman 60 kg title, while Nikolay Iliev took freestyle gold at 71 kg. Andrea Niseva claimed silver in the girls’ 61 kg category, with Radoslav Velikov Jr at 45 kg and Stefan Stefanov at 110 kg also taking silver in freestyle. Mert Mustafov at 55 kg and Petko Sarakostov at 65 kg narrowly missed the freestyle podium after reaching the bronze-medal bouts.
“A year ago, we took over the federation with a clear commitment to return Bulgarian wrestling to its roots by giving young Bulgarian talents and athletes developed by local clubs and coaches a chance. We are already seeing the results. The change is real,” Bulgarian Wrestling Federation President Stanka Zlateva said.
The federation’s Managing Board said the success in Samokov reflected the new programme for focused work with young athletes, confidence in Bulgarian specialists and a clear strategy to develop wrestling schools nationwide.
“These children are the face of the new Bulgarian wrestling: talented, disciplined and developed in Bulgarian clubs. They are already returning Bulgaria to where it belongs, among the leading forces in European and world wrestling,” Zlateva said.
BWF thanked all coaches, clubs, athletes, parents, organizers and volunteers who helped make the championship in Samokov a success.
“Bulgarian wrestling has a future, and that future is already winning medals,” BWF’s Managing Board added.
