Balgarianovinite.com President Iliana Iotova will take part in celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising in the town of Apriltsi, the head of State’s Press Secretariat said. This year also marks 50 years since Apriltsi was officially declared a town.
On Saturday evening, the President and Commander-in-Chief will receive the honour guard of the National Guard Unit and the 14th Student Guard Detachment. Iotova will deliver an address, followed by a ceremonial tattoo. The event will be held under the President’s auspices as part of the nationwide observances dedicated to the anniversary of the April Uprising.
The Novo Selo Uprising, part of the final chapter of the April Uprising, erupted on May 2, 1876, with the proclamation of the Novo Selo Republic. It was brutally crushed nine days later. Hundreds of local residents were killed in the struggle for freedom and more than 700 buildings were destroyed by fire. Many survivors were forced to flee, according to the Municipality of Apriltsi’s website.
In 1976, to mark the centenary of the April Uprising, the villages of Novo Selo, Vidima, Ostrets, and Zla Reka were united to form the town of Apriltsi.
The four-day commemorative programme, marking both the 50th anniversary of Apriltsi being granted town status and the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, began on May 21 and will continue through May 24. The programme features cultural performances, historical reenactments, a scientific conference, and ceremonial appearances by military honor guards.
