Sofia Municipal Council to Review Report on Optimization of Capital’s Tram Network 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Viktor Chaushev, Sofia’s Deputy Mayor for Transportation and Urban Mobility, submitted a report to the Sofia City Council on a large-scale optimization of the capital’s tram network, the Sofia Municipality press service reported on Saturday. The report is set to be reviewed by the Municipal Council, and the changes will be implemented in phases until the end of the year.
The main goal of the reform is to introduce coordinated schedules with regular intervals, reduce waiting times, and provide faster and more convenient connections between the various city boroughs. Chaushev stated that this is the first step toward building a better-coordinated tram system, in which the lines operate as a single network rather than as separate routes.
The changes include new direct routes, the extension and optimization of existing lines, and the introduction of synchronized schedules to limit so-called “bunching” of trams – a situation in which several vehicles travel one after another, followed by long intervals without service.
Two new tram lines were proposed to be established:

Line No. 13 connecting the Zaharna Fabrika borough and the Vitosha metro station.
Line No. 17 between the Manastirski Livadi and the Orlandovtsi boroughs, providing a new direct connection between the southern and northern parts of Sofia.

The report outlines changes to existing routes of lines No. 1, 3, and 8. New coordinated schedules are being phased in for lines 4, 6, 10, 12, and 18, as well as for the new lines.
Synchronization with traffic lights on key routes is also planned to allow trams to pass through more quickly and improve the regularity of service.
Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev said: “We continue to work toward more reliable and predictable public transportation that serves as a real alternative to cars. This means not only new infrastructure but also better organization of the existing network, so that people can travel faster and with less waiting.”
