Balgarianovinite.com Turkish police used smoke bombs and water cannons at the headquarters of Turkiye’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), in Ankara to gain entry and reinstate Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the former CHP Chair who had been reinstated by a court ruling, to his office, Turkish media reported on Sunday. The CHP headquarters had been blocked for several days by supporters of the party’s de facto Chair, Ozgur Ozel.
On May 21, the Ankara Court of Appeals ruled to annul the party’s 38th congress in 2023 and, as a result, to remove incumbent party chairman Ozel from office and reinstate former CHP leader Kilicdaroglu. The decision was justified on the grounds that the vote to elect the leadership had been tainted by bribes and promises of other benefits to delegates. The CHP appealed the ruling to the Supreme Election Council, the Supreme Court of Appeals, and the Ankara Court of Appeals. The Court of Appeals and the Supreme Election Council rejected the CHP’s appeal.
Ozel’s supporters barricaded themselves inside days ago, however, police stormed the building on Sunday using smoke bombs and tear gas. According to media reports, thick smoke is billowing from the building, and law enforcement officers used force to disperse Ozel’s supporters.
The daily Cumhuriyet quoted Ozel as saying that the police officers are attacking “very fiercely and brutally.” He added: “I don’t know how long we can hold out, but we will resist as long as we have the strength.”
Before the police stormed the headquarters, two representatives from each of the two factions within the CHP met with Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci, but no resolution to the issue was reached. A planned meeting between Kilicdaroglu and Ozel has also been cancelled, and tensions outside the CHP headquarters continue.
