Politicians, Public Figures Address Bulgarians on Day of Bulgarian Alphabet as Nationwide Celebrations Take Place 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Тhe Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture, and of Slav Letters was marked with ceremonial processions and celebrations across Bulgaria on Sunday. Politicians and public figures addressed Bulgarians on the occasion, highlighting the importance of the Bulgarian language, the legacy of Cyrillic script, and the role of education and culture in shaping national identity.
In Sofia, the procession was joined by President Iliana Iotova, National Assembly Chair Mihaela Dotsova, Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, MPs, Deputy Prime Minister Ivo Hristov, Education and Science Minister Georgi Valchev, Culture Minister Evtim Miloshev, Innovation and Digital Transformation Minister Ivan Vasilev, Bulgarian National Television Director General Milena Milotinova, Bulgarian National Radio Director General Milen Mitev, and representatives of the academic community of Sofia University. Following the procession, a ceremony opened outside the Sts Cyril and Methodius National Library with a water blessing led by Patriarch Daniil.
Addressing the Bulgarian people, President Iliana Iotova said: Let us preserve the Bulgarian language, which makes us a nation, connects us, unites us, and defines our national identity. No victory can be meaningful unless its written legacy and memory are preserved, and no achievement is worthwhile unless it leads to the advancement of the people and culture. No defeat will ever be fateful as long as we preserve our faith and conscience.
Prime Minister Rumen Radev said: On the Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the Bulgarian people celebrate Bulgaria’s contribution to world culture. The Bulgarian language and alphabet unite, educate, and inspire generations to overcome all delusion, ignorance, and self-interest. In a global world of homogenizing cultures and vanishing languages, the Bulgarian alphabet has become our shield, because it is precisely the alphabet and spirituality that are embedded in the very foundations of our statehood.”
Education and Science Minister Georgi Valchev said: This is a day on which we pay tribute to the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius, to their disciples, and to all those generations of Bulgarians who have preserved and passed on the power of the written word, of enlightenment, and of literacy. A day on which we remember that spirituality and education are the foundation of all true national development. The Bulgarian literary tradition is one of our most significant contributions to European cultural history. It is our duty to preserve and develop it.
Environment and Water Minister Rositsa Karamfilova-Blagova said: A people who carry letters in their hearts never lose their way. Days like this are also a time to thank artists and to bow our heads to teachers — the people who lay the foundations of the future every day.
Sofia Mayor Vassil Teziev said: Today we feel how the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius continues to live within us — in the way we think, speak, and connect with one another. Today, nearly 300 million people around the world write using our alphabet. They use it to share their dreams, seek understanding, express love, and pass on knowledge. That is both a tremendous responsibility and a source of genuine pride, because the Cyrillic alphabet is not only part of our history, but also a living connection between people, cultures, and generations.
Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil said: May 24 is both an inherently Christian feast and a deeply Bulgarian holiday. May 24 is not simply a remembrance of historical events, but a celebration of the Bulgarian people’s own spiritual enlightenment. We are not a tree without roots, but a people with an unshakable foundation in the faith of the holy brothers, in their wisdom, and in their love for God and neighbour.
In a Facebook post, GERB leader Boyko Borissov urged the Bulgarian people to preserve the power of the Bulgarian language and respect for education, for they are what keep Bulgarians together as a people. He described May 24 as “the brightest and best Bulgarian holiday,” “a day when we proudly remember that we gave all Slavic peoples an alphabet through which they can celebrate our spirituality, culture, and knowledge.”
Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria and the Yes, Bulgaria – the two parties that comprise the Democratic Bulgaria coalition – both published Facebook posts, congratulating the Bulgarian people on the national holiday.
Movement for Rights and Freedoms Chair Delyan Peevski said: Even today, the great work of Saints Cyril and Methodius to establish Slavic culture as part of European culture embodies the Bulgarian image and spirit. The Bulgarian people express their gratitude to educators, teachers, professors, cultural figures, artists, and those who carry the torch of knowledge, to those who, through the power of words and writing, inspire and shape the public perception of the world.
Continue the Change said that this is the day when Bulgaria celebrates its language, its memory, and its identity. A people who preserve their language preserve their freedom, the party added.
Referencing a quote from Ivan Vazov’s poem Paisii from Epic of the Forgotten, Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov wrote on Facebook: Let us never forget that ‘We, too, in this world have performed a good deed, given all Slav peoples the books they read.’ Politicians, Public Figures Address Bulgarians on Day of Bulgarian Alphabet as Nationwide Celebrations Take Place 2026 THE NEWS FROM BULGARIA – NEWS AGENCY 2009-2025 2026-05-24 13:43:50 Latest news World news Country news Most important news latest news most important latest of the day Justice Petar Nizamov Feathers Petar Nizamov- Feathers Justice bg iustitia.bg iustitia iusticia usticia investigation Burgas Bulgaria news news of the last hour news of the day news of today Bulgaria news The news from Bulgaria blitz news top news most important most commented latest news Boyko Borisov news weather coronavirus news news weather facebook youtube facebook instagram news today news of the last minutes news today today news news bg news leading news hot news bg news site for news all news news bg news of the last hour latest latest news bg news of today news today news today news of the last hour latest news today news bg news news 24 hours news vesti bg novini news world bird bg bivol bg bivol trud bg novini latest news today novinite bg news hello bulgaria political party coat of arms delyan peevski scandalous Bulgarian National Television Free Europe Television scandal exclusive live tv live right now tv tv online tv program bg live now tv news online tv online live court Burgas court Burgas district court Burgas court Burgas district court Burgas district court Burgas appellate court Burgas prosecutor Burgas prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev Prosecutor Geshev Tsatsarov Ministry of Internal Affairs Burgas ODMR Burgas ODPR Burgas police Burgas district police Burgas prosecutor Tsatsarov SGS cases Varna court chairman of the SGS court decisions on civil cases decisions on cases Plovdiv court decision of the court decisions cases Varna court criminal cases district district court decisions work in the court SGS chairman of the SGS judges Sofia court post judges Plovdiv court Plovdiv judges Plovdiv Supreme Court Inspectorate Supreme Court Supreme Judicial Council lawyer lawyer criminal cases lawyer civil cases lawyer marriage cases lawyer administrative criminal law criminal process civil law civil process administrative law constitutional law
