Balgarianovinite.com Residents affected by the floods in the Sevlievo area can receive at least three forms of social support, with total aid reaching up to nearly EUR 4,000, Labour and Social Policy Minister Nataliya Efremova during a news briefing near Sevlievo on Monday.
She added that 110 home visits had already been carried out in the town to assess and document the damage.
The assistance package includes a one-off payment of EUR 1,171, additional support of some EUR 1,500, and up to EUR 1,300 for replacing damaged electrical appliances through the Social Protection fund. Efremova noted that the funds are secured in the state budget and will be disbursed within short timeframes.
Efremova noted that teams from her Ministry have been on the ground since the early stages of the disaster, with social workers assisting in cleanup efforts and preparations underway to support affected households.
She also said the Ministry has developed preventive measures allowing unemployed people to be hired for cleanup and recovery work in similar situations. The measures will be coordinated with regional governors to determine where additional manpower is needed.
Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Ivan Shishkov said that water supply in Sevlievo is expected to be restored by the end of the day in the best-case scenario, and by mid-Tuesday in the worst case. Shishkov, along with Efremova and Agriculture and Food Minister Plamen Abrovski, carried out an on-site inspection of the progress of restoration work on the damaged water supply branch serving Sevlievo.
Heavy rainfall on May 22 and 23 caused disruption in the Gabrovo region, affecting the municipalities of Sevlievo and Dryanovo. Rising levels of the Vidima River and other tributaries led to flooding, damaged infrastructure, and temporary disruptions to transport links in parts of the area.
