Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria’s upcoming participation as a guest of honour at the Bookfest International Book Fair in Bucharest was presented at a press conference held on Wednesday in the Romanian capital. The event will take place for the 19th time and is held under the patronage of the President of Romania. The programme includes over 450 events, 30 related to Bulgaria and Bulgarian literature and culture.
“Twelve years after Romania was the guest of honour at the International Book Fair in Sofia, Bulgaria will now be the guest of honour at the International Book Fair in Bucharest and will be the highlight of the event. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know each other better,” Oana Stanescu, cultural manager and coordinator of Bulgaria’s participation in the fair, said.
“We view this invitation as a gesture of the centuries-old hospitality that Romanian artists have shown to Bulgarian artists. A century and a half ago, in 1870, there were eight Bulgarian printing houses in Bucharest, and all Bulgarian periodicals, as well as some books, were printed right here in Bucharest. There is no prominent figure in our history whose fate is not linked to Romania and Bucharest – Botev, Levski, Rakovski, Karavelov. The Bulgarian people have always been grateful to the Romanian people for their protection. A century-long cooperation that began back then,” Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Romania Radko Vlaykov said.
Dan Croitoru, editorial director of the Polirom Publishing House and board member of the Romanian Publishers Association, said that Bulgaria has done much more to promote Romanian literature and to translate and publish Romanian authors in Bulgaria than Romania for Bulgarian authors.
“We know very little about our neighbours’ literature. We are more familiar with British and American literature than with that of our neighbours,” he added, expressing hope that the country’s participation with such a large Bulgarian delegation and number of authors would have an impact in the future.
He expressed his gratitude to translators such as Mariana Mangiulea Jatop, Catalina Puiu, and Iulia Bahovski, who, in his words, make it possible for Bulgarian authors to be read in Romania.
Stanescu presented the programme for Bulgaria’s participation and highlighted some of the events. Bulgaria’s booth will open on Wednesday, June 3. Students from the Hristo Botev Bulgarian Theoretical High School will add a festive touch with a dance performance, after which the focus will shift to institutional and cultural dialogue as part of a Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) event. It will bring together on one stage BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and Claudia Nicolae, Director General of AGERPRES, the Romanian National News Agency. Later, readers are invited to a meeting with two of contemporary Europe’s most prominent writers: Georgi Gospodinov and Mircea Cartarescu.
On Thursday, June 4, the focus will be on the Bulgarian book market, translation, and the exchange of ideas across cultural spaces. Topics such as national book publishing, the experience of translators from Bulgarian in Romania, and mechanisms for funding, distribution, and promotion will be discussed. Afterward, literature will become a space of shared memory in an event dedicated to Anton Pann, a collector of Balkan folklore, organized in partnership with the National Museum of Romanian Literature.
Friday, June 5, will be a day dedicated to poetry and children’s literature. Saturday, June 6, will focus on contemporary prose and the role of literary awards in shaping the current norm. On Sunday, June 7, the programme concludes with a historical and commemorative theme, featuring book presentations and discussions on history, fiction, and identity in Southeast Europe, following a path that connects the archives of history with the fiction of memory.
The Bookfest International Book Fair in Bucharest will take place at the Romexpo Exhibition Centre from June 3 to 7. The Bulgarian stand is organized with the support of the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture and the Bulgarian Book Association (BBA). There, visitors will find a diverse selection of books in Bulgarian, as well as Romanian editions of famous Bulgarian books.
Project partners include the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry, the Bulgarian Tourism Ministry, the National Palace of Culture, BTA, BBA, the Sofia Literary Agency, and the Reading Sofia Foundation.
