Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria makes a very important contribution to NATO’s security, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said on Thursday, meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels. Radev noted that Bulgaria has achieved the target of defence investments equal to 2% of GDP and is consistently moving toward increasing them to 5%.
The Prime Minister said that NATO’s task is to defend every inch of the Alliance’s territory. “In such challenging times, NATO must ensure strong investments in defence, have a clear vision and a viable strategy, and take a realistic approach to the challenges,” he added.
“We must achieve a very balanced mix of capabilities in order to strengthen national defence capacities and contribute to NATO’s overall capabilities,” the Bulgarian Prime Minister said. He added that Bulgaria has secured significant investments for the modernization of the Bulgarian armed forces, including through domestically produced equipment and resources.
“It is important to invest in people as well and to have common standards for attracting and retaining personnel,” the Prime Minister noted. “I believe the war in Ukraine has demonstrated the need for motivated and dedicated personnel,” he added.
For his part, NATO Secretary General Rutte said that Bulgaria is an important ally and helps protect NATO’s eastern flank. “The Black Sea and Bulgaria play a key role for the Alliance. The country hosts forward presence forces, which I visited some time ago and was very impressed by,” he added. According to him, Bulgaria also makes an important contribution to the KFOR forces. Rutte said that Bulgaria’s military industry supports the entire Alliance. He also added that he and Prime Minister Radev have been good friends for many years.
Later on Thursday, Prime Minister Radev will be received successively by the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa.
