Balgarianovinite.com Lom District Court suspended Lom Mayor Tsvetan Petrov from office, the Montana Regional Court said on Thursday.
Judging from evidence taken in the pre-trial proceedings, on April 15, 2026, in the office building of a municipal-owned enterprise in Lom, Petrov, acting in his capacity as a public official, offered a pecuniary benefit of EUR 50 each to employees of the enterprise. According to the prosecution case, the accused sought to induce the employees in question to vote for a particular political coalition and a candidate with a particular preference in the April 19, 2026 parliamentary elections.
According to investigators, around 40 people attended the meeting at the enterprise, with 22 already identified and questioned. The prosecution said that the position held by the accused creates an opportunity to influence witnesses, as the enterprise is part of the municipal structure and the mayor has authority over its management.
On May 13, residents of Lom protested in front of the local municipality building demanding Petrov’s resignation.
After reviewing the case materials, the magistrates ruled that the legal grounds for removal from office had been met and that there was a real risk the accused could interfere with the investigation through his official position. The offence carries a penalty of two to seven years of imprisonment and a fine ranging from BGN 10,000 to BGN 30,000.
The ruling may be appealed or protested at the Montana Regional Court within three days, the court said.
