Balgarianovinite.com The sixth edition of the Nishka ot Koren Festival [ancestral threat] in Munster gathered nearly 3,000 Bulgarians from Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden, the Consulate General of Bulgaria in Dusseldorf said.
The programme included more than 350 participants across 21 folk dance groups, including five Bulgarian Sunday schools with their own ensembles. The event was organised by the Little Bulgaria Cultural Association and coincided with the Day of Sts Cyril and Methodius, which was a central theme of this year’s edition.
The consulate noted that the honorary consul of Bulgaria in North Rhine-Westphalia, Werner Jostmeier, highlighted the importance of cultural diversity in Europe and the partnership between Bulgaria and Germany within the EU.
The festival opened with a parade of dance groups through the central streets of Munster, followed by traditional Bulgarian horo circle dances. On May 24, participating Bulgarian Sunday schools held a procession, while themed areas such as a “Cyrillic courtyard”, craft street and traditional market were open throughout the day.
A special attraction was a large traditional cooking pan brought from the western Bulgarian town of Koprivshtitsa, where the authentic kavarma dish was prepared. The programme also featured a performance by the Kanarite folk band.
Earlier, chair of the Little Bulgaria Cultural Association Katya Byalkova told BTA that the festival has grown from an expected 250 visitors in 2019 to around 3,000 participants today, becoming one of the largest Bulgarian cultural events in Germany.
She added that her Association is officially recognised as a folk cultural centre and operates in Munster under Bulgaria’s Ministry of Culture framework.
