Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Hristo Polendakov held a farewell meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Canada’s Ambassador to Bulgaria, Gavin Buchan, who is resident in Bucharest and who will complete his tour in the summer of 2026, Polendakov’s Ministry said in a press release on Thursday.
The sides focused on the marking in 2026 of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Canada, which provides an excellent opportunity to further deepen cooperation and enhance high-level political dialogue.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on June 30, 1966.
The Deputy Minister lauded bilateral relations and emphasized that Bulgaria regards Canada as a priority foreign-policy partner and a trusted Ally within NATO. In this context, the sides noted the significant potential for expanding and strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation in key areas such as security and defence, energy, trade, and investment. Innovation, artificial intelligence, education, science, and culture were also identified as priority areas for further development.
The important role of the large Bulgarian community in Canada was also noted. The community is well integrated into Canadian society and actively contributes to the country’s cultural diversity and economic development.
According to the 2021 Canadian census, 33,085 people reported Bulgarian ethnic or cultural origin (ancestry), either alone or in combination with other origins. Various Bulgarian diaspora organizations, community leaders, and historical sources have cited figures as high as 250,000 Bulgarians and people of Bulgarian descent in Canada. The largest concentrations are found in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.
The sides share an interest in the opening of a Canadian embassy in Bulgaria in the near future, which would contribute even further to the growth of trade and economic interaction.
