Balgarianovinite.com The opposition Democratic Bulgaria and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms have called for the dismissal of National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) Deputy Governor Momchil Mavrov over allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
The call follows the uncovering of a scheme involving the misuse of NHIF funds through fictitious rehabilitation clinical pathways.
On Friday, the parliamentary group of Democratic Bulgaria (DB) announced it was submitting a request for Mavrov’s dismissal. MP Ivaylo Mirchev said that Mavrov had become “a symbol of corrupt practices” in Bulgarian healthcare. Bozhidar Bozhanov argued that Mavrov had previously had part of his powers revoked by the NHIF governor due to alleged violations, including overpricing of IT services and obstruction of inspections in regional health insurance funds in Pazardzhik and Plovdiv.
Separately, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) parliamentary group also announced plans to submit a draft resolution calling for the dismissal of the entire NHIF management. MP Levent Apti added that the request specifically targets Mavrov due to the leadership’s failure to address long-standing systemic issues.
In response, Momchil Mavrov rejected the accusations, sayingg that his work has always been guided by the principle that “the patient and the public interest come first.” He described the claims against him as politically motivated and unfounded, arguing that no irregularities had been found in official inspections following a temporary restriction of some of his powers.
Mavrov outlined a series of achievements during his tenure, including the identification of non-existent hospital capacity, detection of irregular hospitalization patterns, improvements in digital services, and measures aimed at increasing transparency, cybersecurity, and budget control within the system. He also emphasized reforms in electronic services and medical aid distribution, claiming they have improved efficiency and reduced administrative burden.
