Balgarianovinite.com Halting military aid to Ukraine is a strategic mistake for Bulgaria’s security, Democratic Bulgaria (DB) MP Ivaylo Mirchev said here Tuesday. He was responding to a statement earlier on Tuesday by Minister of Defence Dimitar Stoyanov, who said the government did not plan further weapons supplies and that it was time for talks on a just peace.
Europe is changing. Russia’s war against Ukraine has accelerated processes once seen as remote: common European defence, joint arms procurement, a shared defence industry and closer coordination among countries, Mirchev wrote on Facebook. He said Bulgaria now risks shutting itself out of the core of European decision-making.
Military aid to Ukraine is not charity. It is an investment in stopping Russian President Vladimir Putin as far as possible from the EU’s borders. The weapons Bulgaria sent to Ukraine were not a donation. Bulgaria was reimbursed through the European Peace Facility, from which it has already received hundreds of millions of euros. Separately, Bulgaria sold more than EUR 6.5 billion worth of weapons and ammunition, money that flowed into the Bulgarian economy, Mirchev noted.
Mirchev argued that when an EU country says it will no longer take part, it does not become more peace-loving, but less relevant.
A divide is already taking shape in Europe, not just between rich and poor countries, those inside and outside Schengen, or those in and outside the eurozone. A new divide is emerging between countries that take responsibility for the continent’s security and those that keep their heads down. This is the real two-speed Europe. The first tier will include countries involved in common defence policies, new industrial projects, decisions on arms, logistics, cybersecurity, border protection and the Black Sea. The second will include everyone else, Mirchev said.
Mirchev said the risk for Bulgaria is enormous, not because it may or may not send several warehouses of old Soviet-era equipment, but because such a signal tells partners not to count on Bulgaria on Europe’s most important issue, its security. And when partners cannot count on a country, they do not invite it to the table where decisions are made, include it in major projects, give it weight in the allocation of resources or consult it when the future security architecture is being shaped, Mirchev wrote.
