Balgarianovinite.com Relations between Turkiye and Bulgaria are extremely productive, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Wednesday, highlighting the deepening cooperation between the two countries in trade, energy and infrastructure projects. Fidan was speaking in an interview with BTA ahead of his visit to Bulgaria, which includes both participation in a summit within the framework of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) and meetings at the state level.
Fidan said that a strong government in Sofia with a long-term horizon is of vital importance not only for the welfare of the country, but also for the stability of the Balkans and the future of Bulgarian-Turkish projects. Fidan emphasized Turkiye’s readiness to cooperate with Bulgaria in the field of energy and the improvement of energy infrastructure which he said is of strategic importance for the energy security of Eastern Europe. He added that currently, the capacity for gas supply from Turkiye to Bulgaria is not sufficient and additional investments are needed from the Bulgarian side. Stable governance, he added, is essential for economic development and for improving living standards across Bulgarian society, including among the country’s ethnic Turkish community.
He also commented on the possibility of revising the contract between the Turkish energy company Botas and the Bulgarian Bulgargaz. “Turkiye and Bulgaria have always been trusted partners in the field of energy in our region. Our goal is to further develop our relations by signing a comprehensive energy cooperation agreement, which will include increasing the natural gas transmission capacity between Turkiye and Bulgaria,” Fidan said . While acknowledging ongoing discussions between the two companies, he said both sides are reviewing the arrangement through constructive dialogue aimed at protecting mutual commercial and legal interests.
Top priorities in bilateral relations between the two countries also include transport connectivity, increasing border capacity and the possibility of opening new border crossings, he said.
Fidan said that events in recent years have very clearly demonstrated the strategic importance of energy, transport and communication connectivity. In his words, Turkiye is located at the heart of global logistics and is a key country for connectivity. Bulgaria is the door that opens to the European markets to which these transport corridors lead. Therefore, close cooperation is important in facilitating customs activities, increasing the capacity of border crossings, digitizing the process and accelerating the transfer process.
He described the relations between Bulgaria and Turkiye as extremely successful. Among the examples of this, he highlighted the goal of increasing trade exchange to USD 10 billion and the alliance within NATO. Tourism has also emerged as a highlight. He noted that 2.8 million Bulgarian tourists visited Turkiye in 2025, adding that Ankara aims to increase that figure further in the coming years.
