Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian driver Nikola Tsolov was stripped of his podium finish in Barcelona after receiving a new penalty from the stewards of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) for overtaking title rival Gabriele Mini off the track.
The Campos Racing driver was demoted from third to fourth place following a five-second time penalty.
Tsolov passed Mini five laps from the finish after exiting Turn 10, but the stewards later ruled that the move had been completed outside track limits.
According to the FIA’s decision, Tsolov explained that, running on soft tyres, he had attacked Mini’s car at Turn 10 after the Italian driver moved to the outside. Due to their differing race strategies, the move was completed on the run from Turn 10 to Turn 11. Tsolov argued that he had not left the track and that the overtake had already been completed.
Mini, meanwhile, told the stewards that he had been defending his position but had left sufficient room for his rival at Turn 11. He added that Tsolov had gained an advantage by completing the manoeuvre while outside the track limits.
The stewards ultimately sided with Mini’s interpretation and imposed a five-second penalty on Tsolov.
As a result, the Bulgarian driver was classified fourth, while Mini moved up to third place and onto the podium.
The revised result leaves Mini with a five-point lead over Tsolov in the championship standings following the Barcelona Grand Prix.
