Balgarianovinite.com The annual meeting of Deputy Chiefs of Defence of the countries participating in the South-Eastern Europe Defence Ministerial Process (SEDM) took place on June 18 in Tbilisi, Georgia, the Bulgarian Defence Ministry said in a press release on Thursday. The event was hosted by Georgian Deputy Chief of Defence Major General Irakli Chichinadze. Bulgaria was represented by a delegation led by Deputy Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Krasimir Kanev.
The forum brought together deputy chiefs of defence and representatives from SEDM member states, the commanders of the multinational brigade South-Eastern Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG), as well as representatives of the Regional Arms Control Verification and Implementation Assistance Centre (RACVIAC) and the UN Development Programme / South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (UNDP/SEESAC). Participants discussed progress achieved so far and opportunities for further development of the SEDM framework, alongside other current issues in regional security and defence cooperation.
In his address, Lieutenant General Kanev highlighted the significant role of the SEDM process in strengthening trust and cooperation among participating countries and in supporting the Euro-Atlantic integration of the region, while also stressing the need to adapt efforts to new security challenges. He introduced incoming commander of the South-Eastern Europe Brigade, Brigadier General Ivan Malamov, who was part of the Bulgarian delegation and is set to assume the post on September 1, 2026.
During the forum, Lieutenant General Kanev also held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Greece, Romania, Georgia and North Macedonia, focusing on challenges and prospects arising from the evolving security environment.
