Balgarianovinite.com Newly-elected Grand Mufti Ahmed Hasanov said that the mission of the Muslim denomination in Bulgaria is to encourage people to become better individuals, speaking to BTA after being elected by the National Muslim Conference in Sofia on Sunday.
Hasanov said the denomination would continue serving Bulgarian citizens by promoting moral values and providing guidance to communities. He stressed that this is both a responsibility and a calling for the institution.
According to Hasanov, the Muslim denomination in Bulgaria is built on centuries-old traditions and established practices, and the new leadership intends to build on that legacy while continuing to work for the benefit of the country’s Muslim community.
He said a detailed programme for the new mandate would be published on the denomination’s website, but noted that one of the main priorities would be strengthening ties with local communities, regional mufti offices and imams. The goal, he said, is to remain close to people and further deepen those connections.
Hasanov also praised the work of outgoing Grand Mufti Mustafa Hadzhi, saying they had worked together successfully and would continue efforts to support the prosperity of Bulgaria’s Muslims.
He added that the new leadership team would place particular emphasis on involving younger people, including young imams and preachers, while continuing to value the experience of senior religious figures.
Hasanov also said the denomination would seek to attract members of the Bulgarian Muslim community living abroad to return and serve in areas facing shortages of imams and religious teachers. He further pledged continued investment in Islamic educational institutions in Bulgaria in order to improve their quality and train future religious leaders domestically.
