Balgarianovinite.com Romanian President Nicusor Dan held a new round of political consultations on Tuesday, meeting all parliamentary parties at the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest after Parliament rejected the government proposed by Prime Minister-designate Adrian Vestea on Monday.
The Social Democratic Party (PSD) told the president it is ready to assume responsibility for governing the country. The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) proposed a prime minister from its own ranks, arguing that no future government could be formed without the far-right party.
The National Liberal Party (PNL) put forward two minority government options: one centred on the PSD and another involving the PNL, the Save Romania Union (USR) and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). The USR ruled out backing any government including the PSD but expressed willingness to join a minority administration with the PNL and UDMR. The party also did not exclude the possibility of early parliamentary elections.
Romania has been in political crisis since the collapse of the pro-European coalition of the PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR in early May. The Social Democrats subsequently joined forces with opposition party AUR in a no-confidence vote that brought down the government of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
Since then, Bolojan’s cabinet has remained in office with limited powers, while the PNL and USR have ruled out further cooperation with the PSD, Romania’s largest parliamentary force, prolonging the deadlock over the formation of a new government.
