Balgarianovinite.com The mosaic discovered in the Temple of Heracles in the ancient Greek city of Heraclea Sintica, near the present-day town of Petrich in Bulgaria, draws attention not only for its decorative value but also for its exceptionally precise craftsmanship. “The quality of execution and the materials used indicate that the sanctuary was well maintained and held an important place in the religious life of the ancient city,” said Professor Lyudmil Vagalinski, the leader of the archaeological excavations at the site, speaking to BTA in an interview.
He said the mosaic is executed in the opus tessellatum technique and features an unusually rich colour palette for the region, including dark violet, ochre, blue and white. Such a combination required carefully selected raw materials and skilled craftsmen, placing it among the more luxurious decorative solutions of the Roman period, the expert explained.
“The execution itself speaks of a high level of building culture and of a temple that was representative rather than secondary,” Prof. Vagalinski said. According to him, the surviving fragments featuring ivy leaves and geometric motifs most likely formed a border around a central scene that has not survived.
Archaeologists believe that this central composition may have depicted one of the labours of Heracles, the divine hero in Greek mythology. While the hypothesis has not yet been proven, it fits well within the context of the temple and the way important cult spaces were decorated in Roman-Greek cities.
The new discovery is also significant because it adds to the understanding of Heraclea Sintica as a wealthy and well-organized urban centre. Such decorative solutions are typically found in buildings associated with the elite or with particularly important public functions, suggesting that the Temple of Heracles was one of the key structures in the ancient city, the archaeologist explained.
Emergency conservation work is currently being carried out on the mosaic by restorer Reneta Karamanova from the National Archaeology Institute and Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Once the work is completed, specialists will decide whether the floor can remain in situ as part of a future exhibition or whether it should be relocated for better protection and display at the History Museum in Petrich.
