Bulgarian, Turkish Parliament Chairs Stress Importance of Parliamentary Dialogue in Advancing Bilateral Relations 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Conferring with Turkish Grand National Assembly Speaker Numan Kurtulmus, Bulgarian Parliament Chair Mihaela Dotsova has said that parliamentary dialogue helps strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
A Bulgarian parliamentary delegation led by Dotsova is in Istanbul to attend the NATO Parliamentary Summit, which will be hosted by the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament. Bulgaria’s National Assembly’s press service said on Sunday. The delegation also includes the head of the Bulgarian Parliament’s delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Ivan Lalov, and deputy head Daniel Mitov.
Positive relations have been established between the parliaments of Bulgaria and Turkiye, providing a solid foundation for deepening dialogue between the two legislatures across a broad range of areas, Dotsova said. She added that a Bulgaria–Turkiye friendship group is expected to be established in the Bulgarian Parliament next week and expressed confidence that its members would work to strengthen exchanges of experience and views with their counterparts in the Turkish Parliament. A productive parliamentary dialogue on legislation covering areas such as the economy, transport, communications, and investment is essential for further expanding trade and economic cooperation between the two countries, she added.
Kurtulmus congratulated Dotsova on her election as Chair of the Bulgarian Parliament and stressed the important role of parliamentary dialogue in advancing bilateral relations. He expressed readiness to intensify contacts between members of the two legislatures and highlighted the important role that Turkiye and Bulgaria play not only as NATO allies but also as Black Sea countries.
Turkiye is not only Bulgaria’s neighbour but also a NATO ally and a key partner in a number of strategic areas, Dotsova said. “We have excellent cooperation in combating illegal migration and safeguarding border security, as well as in transport, energy supplies, trade, investment, tourism, defence, and counterterrorism,” she noted. “Our strong relations should continue to develop on the basis of equality and mutually beneficial cooperation,” she said.
Dotsova identified innovation, digital infrastructure, green technologies, and low-carbon energy technologies as promising new areas for bilateral cooperation. She added that continued joint efforts by Bulgaria and Turkiye to combat illegal migration remain of particular importance not only for Bulgaria but for the European Union as a whole.
