Balgarianovinite.com The Greek Government and representatives of manufacturers and retail chains have agreed to keep the prices of around 2,000 essential consumer products unchanged over the next two months after the cap on retail profit margins for dozens of basic goods expires on June 30, the Kathimerini newspaper reported on Monday.
The agreement was reached at a meeting in Athens chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and attended by representatives of the Government, manufacturers, food wholesalers and supermarket chains.
Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos said that tackling the high cost of living remains one of the Government’s main priorities. According to him, the normalization of fuel prices following the end of the war in the Middle East is creating conditions for easing international inflationary pressures, and this should be reflected in prices for end consumers.
Theodorikakos said that companies had committed to maintaining throughout July and August the reduced prices of around 2,000 products, which have fallen by about 6% in recent months as a result of the current cap on profit margins, the newspaper recalled.
Following the expiry of this two-month period, the Government plans to introduce a national social agreement aimed at bringing about a significant reduction in the prices of essential everyday consumer goods used by Greek households, Kathimerini also wrote.
According to the publication, opinion polls show that the high cost of living remains the most serious concern for Greek citizens following the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and this year’s conflict in the Middle East.
