Due to the torrential rain, many underpasses in the city’s central districts, Besiktas, Sisli, the historic Fatih district, and Sultangazi, were inundated.
Certain sections of these neighbourhoods were covered in deep water, according to a report by state broadcaster TRT Haber.
Water flooded part of the covered market in the Fatih neighbourhood. Shop owners tried to prevent it from entering their stores, TRT further reported.
Road traffic was severely disrupted. Pedestrians also had difficulty getting around.
In Mecidiyekoy, vehicles were literally swimming through water that reached the top of their tires.
