Balgarianovinite.com A discussion, organised by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), marking the 160th anniversary of Pencho Slaveykov’s birth was held on Tuesday at the BTA National Press Club in Gabrovo. The event was part of BTA’s Pencho Slaveykov Today initiative. It was moderated by poet, literary scholar and critic Yordan Eftimov. The central message of the discussion was that Pencho Slaveykov was a figure who helped steer Bulgarian culture toward modernity through both his literary work and his public activity, and a contemporary reading of his legacy reveals the philosophical, social, cultural and ethical dimensions of his creative work.
Moderator Eftimov opened the discussion by highlighting Slaveykov’s role as one of the driving forces behind Bulgarian modernism and as a figure who left a lasting mark not only on literature but also on the development of key cultural institutions.
BTA Director General Kiril Valchev said that an enlightened society recognizes and nurtures the talents of its greatest minds, adding that Slaveykov’s example demonstrates how literature continues to shape cultural memory and contemporary identity.
Historian Daniela Tsoneva recalled that Slaveykov’s ties to Gabrovo were forged both through his father, Petko Slaveykov, and through leading figures in the city’s cultural life with whom the poet collaborated and shared common ideals.
Veneta Georgieva-Kozareva, a longtime curator at the House of Humour and Satire Museum, noted that although Slaveykov is rarely described as a satirist, “he is closely connected with humour and satire”, particularly through works such as On the Island of the Blessed, in which he employed irony and literary mystification to present modern literary ideas.
Psychiatrist Dr. Lubomir Trifonov said Slaveykov was a poet who transcended provincial thinking and embraced universal ideas. He linked the poet’s work to the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, the archetypes of Carl Gustav Jung and Ezra Pound’s understanding of poets as “the antennae of society”.
Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev said Slaveykov’s life exemplified the resilience of the human spirit, the ability to overcome adversity and the pursuit of spiritual growth despite personal hardship.
Galya Koleva, a Bulgarian language and literature teacher at the Aprilov National High School, said Slaveykov succeeds in drawing students out of apathy by encouraging them to think critically, explore the spiritual dimensions of literature and embrace the intellectual challenge posed by his works.
Eleventh-grade student Borislava Staneva said the poem Cis moll offers an important lesson in perseverance, showing that an artist ultimately earns recognition by refusing to give up despite misunderstanding and rejection.
Student Hristian Georgiev said it was Slaveykov’s biography, and particularly the way he overcame the consequences of the accident near the Maritsa River that permanently affected his health, that inspired him to take a deeper interest in the poet’s work and read it more closely.
Concluding the discussion, Eftimov said Slaveykov was among the figures who left a lasting imprint not only on Bulgarian literature but also on Bulgaria’s broader path toward modernity.
The Pencho Slaveykov Today initiative is being held at all 33 BTA national press clubs in Bulgaria. The first discussion, dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the poet’s birth, took place in his hometown of Tryavna on April 27. Similar events have since been held in Samokov, Kazanlak, Stara Zagora, Kyustendil, Pernik, Haskovo, Kardzhali and Pazardzhik.
The December 2026 issue of BTA’s LIK magazine will be dedicated to Pencho Slaveykov. In addition to reports from the discussions, the issue will include specially written texts of 160 words each by 160 people, marking the 160th anniversary of the poet’s birth.
