Balgarianovinite.com The European Parliament adopted new rules on air passenger rights by a large majority on Tuesday. MEPs backed changes agreed with the Council of the EU by 646 votes in favour, 12 against and 3 abstentions.
After the vote, European Parliament rapporteur on air passenger rights Andrey Novakov MEP (GERB/EPP) held a news conference in the journalists’ briefing room. The report concerns common rules on compensation and assistance for passengers in cases of denied boarding, flight cancellation or long delays, and on air carrier liability for passengers and their baggage. The rules have not been updated since 2004.
Asked by BTA whether the new rules could drive up airfares, especially as low-cost airlines suspend operations over high kerosene prices, given the EP-approved retention of the right to compensation for delays of more than three hours, set at EUR 250 for flights of up to 1,500 kilometres, EUR 400 for intra-EU flights above that distance and EUR 600 for longer flights, Novakov, rapporteur for the agreement reached in the Conciliation Committee, said:
“We are taking such concerns very seriously, concerns that many people appear to have raised during the discussions, namely that air ticket prices could increase. That is why we asked the Commission to examine the matter and assess the new rules,” Novakov said.
“And, as it appears and as was established, these rules will add EUR 1.80 to ticket prices, just EUR 1.80. So, in the context of receiving compensation of up to EUR 600 and paying hundreds of euro for your child to sit next to you, as well as having your baggage included in the ticket price, I think this is nothing,” he said.
“So EUR 1.80, one euro and eighty cents, could be added to the price. Nothing more than that. I am responsible for that EUR 1.80. Anything above that will be something the airlines have done themselves or will be due to some other reason, fuel, fees, strikes, higher wages or something else, but not these new rules,” Novakov said.
