Balgarianovinite.com Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijevic met with Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini on Tuesday, with one of the key topics of their talks being the rehabilitation of rail passenger services between Belgrade and Trieste, Serbian media reported.
“The project is included in Serbia’s Development Plan through 2035 and represents an important step toward improving regional connectivity, facilitating the faster movement of passengers and goods, and further advancing sustainable transport,” Sofronijevic said after the meeting, which was held at the Serbian government headquarters in Belgrade.
Although the railway infrastructure linking Belgrade and Trieste is already in place, there is currently no passenger train operating along the route.
Sofronijevic said Serbia and Italy would work together to implement this historically significant project that would connect four countries. The planned route follows the historic alignment of the former Simplon Orient Express: Belgrade–Zagreb (Croatia)–Ljubljana (Slovenia)–Trieste (Italy).
“The development of rail transport is one of our strategic priorities because we want to promote more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation,” Sofronijevic said in a statement published on the ministry’s website.
The ministers also devoted particular attention to the issue of the length of stay permitted for Serbian professional drivers in the Schengen Area.
Sofronijevic said the Italian side had expressed full understanding for Serbia’s initiative to introduce so-called D visas for professional drivers, which would significantly facilitate their work and help ensure the stability of European supply chains.
“This is not an issue affecting only Serbia, but other countries in the region as well. It directly impacts the functioning of the economy and logistics flows across Europe,” she said, thanking Italy for its understanding and willingness to work jointly on finding a solution.
Salvini praised Serbia’s progress in developing its road and railway infrastructure, describing the country as a model of successful infrastructure development in the region.
He said Italy would actively support efforts to resolve issues affecting professional road transport operators, as well as the implementation of the Belgrade-Trieste rail project.
Salvini added that another focus of bilateral cooperation is the successful organization of Expo 2027 in Belgrade, with Italian companies expected to participate not only in the construction of the Italian pavilion but also in other infrastructure and construction projects related to the event.
