Balgarianovinite.com Ozgur Ozel, who was removed by a court decision from the post of chair of the main opposition party in Turkiye – the People’s Republican Party (CHP), outlined three possible scenarios in an interview with the Birgun newspaper on Friday. The three options, according to Ozel, are a “battle” within the CHP itself, the aim of which will be to “take back the party”, create an entirely new party, or use another party to register lists of his supporters in possible early parliamentary elections.
On May 21, the Court of Appeal in Ankara issued a decision canceling the 38th regular congress of the CHP from 2023, removing the party’s previous leadership of chairman Ozgur Ozel and returning its old leadership led by Kemal Kilicdaroglu. The decision caused tension in the ranks of the CHP, protests and divided the party into two camps – in support of Ozel and in support of Kulcdaroglu.
“If the court prevents us from getting the party back, we will create a new party that we will turn into the main opposition. There will also be a party ready to present a list of candidates [supporting the Ozel faction in the CHP] for parliamentary representatives in the event of early elections,” said Ozel.
According to him, the scenario envisages that even in the party in question, which will be kept ready, an accountability-election conference will be held, in which one of the former MPs of the CHP from the Ozel circle will be elected as chair, and the leadership will be entrusted to persons who do not intend to engage in politics in the future, along with former MPs. The plan also envisages that Ozel and other current MPs from the CHP will not join the party in question, i.e. to be used only for the registration of lists.
Ozel explained that a name for a possible new party has not yet been discussed.
Ozel refuted the words of the CHP MP Suleyman Bulbu, who stated that after July 20 – the date when the courts in Turkiye go on vacation – a new party will be created with the participation of 100 (close to Ozel) MPs. Ozel noted that July 20 is not the day when it will be definitively decided whether to leave the CHP and create his own party.
He explained that he is in constant contact with about 110 MPs and their main desire is to regain the People’s Republican Party again, but he cannot say with certainty how many of them would follow him in creating a new political project. He warned that Turkiye would be pushed into a stalemate that would last for years if they failed to reclaim the party.
The ousted chair of the CHP stressed that when he was elected to the post, the party’s members were 1,250,000, and today they exceed 2 million people. At the same time, he announced that 45,000 members left the party after the publication of the court decision by which he was removed from office.
According to him, consideration of the appeal against the Court’s decision to cancel the party congress was deliberately delayed and there was a reluctance to consider it before the court vacation. Ozel sees a high probability that the court will cancel the precautionary measure, which is to remove him from office.
