Balgarianovinite.com Ten people have been arrested in an operation by Bulgaria’s General Directorate Border Police targeting a cross-border rental car fraud scheme worth approximately EUR 900,000, the Border Police said on its Facebook page.
Police searched 14 properties across the country. The alleged organizer of the scheme and three other participants have been charged. According to Border Police, the organizer recruited so-called “mules” – individuals who used their personal identity documents to rent vehicles in Germany before transporting them to Bulgaria.
The investigation was launched after an increase in the number of vehicles reported stolen in Germany that were later found in Bulgaria. During the initial stages of the investigation, authorities identified and seized seven passenger cars, all of them first registered in 2025. Investigators also gathered evidence linking Bulgarian nationals to the criminal operation in both Bulgaria and Germany.
Evidence has so far been established in connection with a total of 15 motor vehicles. Investigators seized documents and payment instruments related to the alleged criminal activity, as well as a motorcycle reported stolen in Germany, Border Police said.
Bulgaria’s General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime received dozens of reports of fraud involving vehicle purchases in Germany in December last year.
