Balgarianovinite.com Actor Leonid Yovchev, who plays the Greek god Dionysus in Javor Gardev’s play The Bacchae, based on Euripides’s text, shared that it is a pleasure to perform at Epidaurus, as any actor could imagine. Yovchev was speaking at BTA’s press club here on Monday, after the play was performed at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus on July 10 and 11 as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival.
The Bacchae is the last surviving tragedy by the Greek playwright Euripides and depicts the return of the god Dionysus to Thebes and his conflict with King Pentheus. It is a co-production of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia and the National Theatre of Northern Greece. Bulgarian actor Leonid Yovchev stars as Dionysus. The performance features Bulgarian and Greek actors, and the music is performed live by the British band The Tiger Lillies.
A summary of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre’s summer tour in Greece was presented in Athens. The tour includes 13 performances of The Bacchae, which will be staged in ancient theatres throughout the country.
Yovchev said: “The chance these days to have 15,000-16,000 people in one place, set apart in the silence of nature, amid the dark hills of the Peloponnese – and this is not a poetic image – is an extraordinary honour and privilege.”
