Bulgaria Plans Consular Days in New Zealand by End-September 2026, Foreign Minister Says 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Outreach consular days are planned to be held in New Zealand by the end of September 2026 at the latest, Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova said here on Monday in a written reply to a question from Democratic Bulgaria MP Dimitar Naydenov. The reply was published on Parliament’s website.
In his question, Naydenov said Bulgarian citizens living in New Zealand had told him that the most recent consular days in the country were held between August 24 and 26, 2024.
Petrova said that the necessary organizational preparations had begun. She explained that Bulgaria’s diplomatic mission in Canberra has extremely limited staffing. Consular services for the entire district are provided by a single posted officer who heads the Consular Office in Canberra and covers Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific island countries.
Another major factor limiting the more frequent organization of consular days in New Zealand is the diplomatic mission’s insufficient financial resources, Petrova said.
According to the Bulgarian Embassy in Canberra, the Bulgarian community in New Zealand numbers approximately 3,000 Bulgarian citizens and people of Bulgarian origin. The largest communities are in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, she added.
As a result of intensive migration in recent years, New Zealand has become the second-largest centre of Bulgarian emigration in the Asia-Pacific region after Australia, she added.
Despite its limited administrative capacity, Bulgaria’s diplomatic mission has pursued a consistent policy of bringing consular services closer to Bulgarian citizens by organizing monthly outreach consular days in major Australian cities and areas with sizable Bulgarian communities.
Over the past 12 months, 15 such consular days have been held in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, sparing Bulgarian citizens the need to travel to Canberra, Petrova said.
