Balgarianovinite.com Democratic Bulgaria has accused President Rumen Radev of steering Bulgaria toward strategic isolation by keeping the country out of Europe’s emerging security initiatives, arguing that his position risks undermining both national interests and the country’s role within the EU and NATO.
In a statement responding to Radev’s remarks from Paris that “Bulgaria’s place is not in the Coalition of the Willing” for Ukraine, the party said that, quite the contrary, Bulgaria should participate in the Coalition of the Willing, and argued that it would allow the country to influence decisions on missile defense, maritime security, cybersecurity, logistics, and defense cooperation while benefiting from new strategic and industrial opportunities.
Democratic Bulgaria rejected what it described as Radev’s “false dilemma” between supporting diplomacy and supporting Ukraine, arguing that meaningful negotiations require military deterrence, pressure on Russia, and guarantees that any peace agreement will be respected.
The party also dismissed Radev’s claim that the coalition aims only to prolong the war, pointing to the Paris declaration’s calls for a ceasefire, direct negotiations, and joint European and US engagement.
The party argued that the debate extends beyond Ukraine, saying Europe is entering a new phase of defense integration that will shape future security, technological development, and industrial cooperation. Excluding Bulgaria from that process, it warned, would leave the country outside a new layer of European integration with long-term strategic consequences.
In a comment for the press where he largely reiterated his party’s declaration, Democratic Bulgaria co-leader Ivaylo Mirchev said Radev’s position represents a turn to the East, because “we’re more focused on serving Russian oligarchs, on protecting corporate interests so they aren’t placed under European sanctions, instead of looking toward Europe and being at the core of European countries.”
Democratic Bulgaria also criticized Radev for attending France’s Bastille Day celebrations while declining to participate in high-level political talks, saying Bulgaria “was present at the ceremony but absent from the decision-making.”
On sanctions, the party rejected Radev’s criticism of the EU’s latest package against Russia, arguing that new measures reflect Moscow’s continued attempts to circumvent existing restrictions rather than their failure. It also questioned whether opposing sanctions affecting Russian Patriarch Kirill and Lukoil shareholder Vagit Alekperov served Bulgaria’s interests.
The statement concludes that Bulgaria should defend its national interests together with its allies, warning that “peace without strength is merely a wish – and a gift to the aggressor”.
