Balgarianovinite.com Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) MPs Stanislav Anastasov and Kalin Stoyanov have submitted a formal alert against Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev to the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, the party’s press service said on Thursday. According to the MRF, Demerdzhiev “has been charged with an offence under the Penal Code and therefore has compromised integrity.”
“The alert contains information about a series of actions on his part that give rise to reasonable suspicions that he used his official powers in a manner incompatible with the principles of legality, impartiality and accountability in the exercise of public authority,” Anastasov was quoted as saying.
During a parliamentary hearing on July 2 concerning media reports about flights taken by MRF Chair Delyan Peevski on private aircraft, Demerdzhiev said it had been established that Peevski and Constitutional Court Judge Desislava Atanasova travelled together by plane to Dubai in 2024. A day later, Atanasova said the claim was untrue.
On July 5, the Interior Minister said checks would be conducted into the origin of the funds used to pay for Peevski’s flights and whether the prices corresponded to market rates.
On July 6, the MRF alerted Europol and Interpol to what it described as “an unprecedented leak and large-scale misuse of the personal data of EU and third-country nationals in the so-called PNR-gate affair.”
On July 10, the Sofia City Prosecution Office ordered checks to establish the relevant facts and circumstances concerning alerts it had received about the use of passenger name record (PNR) data. The alerts were submitted by MPs, lawyers and members of the public and contained various allegations.
