Balgarianovinite.com The Apostle of Freedom, Vasil Levski, gave words and substance to the aspirations of a people seeking liberty and wove the moral, political and social ambitions of Bulgarians into a national ideal untouched by time, President Iliana Iotova said on Saturday. She was speaking in Karlovo at a ceremony marking the 189th anniversary of Levski’s birth.
“Levski carried freedom within himself and wanted everyone else to carry and possess it, because freedom develops and elevates the human spirit, gives meaning to struggle and creates the future,” Iotova said.
She described it as an honour to join Karlovo residents and visitors as the town and the whole of Bulgaria paid tribute to the foremost apostle of the Bulgarian national revolution. Patriotic Karlovo proudly bears the name “the town of Levski”, she added.
Iotova noted that for nearly two centuries the people of Karlovo had preserved Levski’s birthplace, which had become a national shrine. The town is also home to the church where he was ordained as Hierodeacon Ignatius and to the grave of his mother, who, Yotova said, never bowed her head.
Levski despised cowardice and betrayal and strongly condemned those who sacrificed ideals for personal gain, the President said. He never sought anything for himself and therefore stands high in Bulgarian history, reminding the nation that victory on the difficult road to freedom can be achieved only through united efforts.
Iotova said much more effort and struggle were needed to realize Levski’s vision of a pure and sacred republic. Bulgarians must remain uncompromising toward injustice and stand together, because nothing is greater than the people and only the people can change the course of time, she added.
In an age of information overload and rapidly advancing technology, Bulgarians must know who they are and where they come from, preserve their identity and remember their national heroes, Iotova said.
She called on Bulgarians to safeguard the virtues bequeathed by Levski so that they could take root among the country’s children and future generations.
Vasil Ivanov Kunchev, known as Vasil Levski, was born on July 18 (July 6, Old Style), 1837, in Karlovo to Ivan Kunchev Ivanov and Gina Vasileva Karaivanova. He was the leading ideologist of the Bulgarian national revolution and the organizer and leader of the Bulgarian national liberation movement.
