Balgarianovinite.com At the start of the Council of Ministers meeting on Wednesday, Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that it is absolutely out of the question for combat operations in the Middle East to be conducted from Bulgarian territory. He emphasized that the deployment of US tanker aircraft at Bezmer Air Base is solely for logistical missions involving in-flight refuelling outside Bulgarian airspace.
The Prime Minister noted that the government has informed the public about our allies’ request to deploy the aircraft and has submitted the matter to the National Assembly for consideration. He added that this will allow the legislature to express their views on the matter.
Parliament will discuss, as the second item on its Wednesday agenda, the draft resolution authorizing the presence on Bulgarian territory of military personnel and aircraft from the US Armed Forces, who will provide support for US operations in the Middle East.
The Prime Minister said that the Council of Ministers amended its previous decision, which had called for the tanker aircraft to be stationed at the civilian airport in Sofia, in close proximity to passenger aircraft and to the capital city.
Radev emphasized that Bulgaria is honouring its commitments under the 2006 Agreement between Bulgaria and the US on Defence Cooperation and counts on its allies to also fulfil their obligations when the country needs support. Despite political insinuations that create uncertainty and undermine Bulgaria’s authority, the country remains a predictable and reliable partner, he added.
The Prime Minister stated that Bulgaria values its good relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. In his words, both the US and Iran bear a huge responsibility, as a potential war in the Middle East could have unpredictable global consequences. Radev said: “It is time to stop looking at each other through the sights of our weapons,” and noted that Bulgaria calls on the parties to the conflict to take a step back, as this is in the interest of both Bulgaria and Europe.
