Balgarianovinite.com Parliament elected Plamen Todorov as a member of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). He was the only candidate for a parliamentary quota seat on the anti-corruption body.
A total of 124 MPs from the Progressive Bulgaria (PB) parliamentary group voted in favour. Seventy-one MPs from GERB-UDF, Democratic Bulgaria, Continue the Change and Vazrazhdane voted against. There were no abstentions. The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) parliamentary group did not participate in the vote.
Until his election to the ACC on Thursday, Plamen Todorov headed the Public Financial Inspection Agency. He was appointed in mid-June at the proposal of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Galab Donev.
On July 14, Todorov presented his vision for the work of the new Anti-Corruption Commission to Parliament’s Committee on Prevention and Counteraction of Corruption. He emphasised prevention, corruption risk analysis, the quality of investigations, staff selection and interaction with other institutions. In his words, the Commission’s performance should be measured not by the number of investigations and case files it handles, but by the quality of its results.
On May 29, Parliament conclusively adopted a government-backed bill on countering corruption among public office holders, providing for the establishment of a new five-member Anti-Corruption Commission.
