July 22, 2026: 84th Death Anniversary of Poet Nikola Vaptsarov 2026

Balgarianovinite.com July 23, 2026, marks the 84th death anniversary of Bulgarian poet Nikola Vaptsarov.
Nikola Vaptsarov was born on December 7 (November 24, old style), 1909, in the town of Bansko, then part of the Ottoman Empire. His father, Yonko Vaptsarov, was a member of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (VMRO) and, together with poet Peyo Yavorov, took part in the struggle for the liberation of the Macedonian region. His mother, Elena Vezuva, was a Protestant teacher and missionary.
As a teenager, Vaptsarov came under the influence of Boris Mailer, a Soviet intelligence agent who had lived with the family since 1919 after arriving in Bulgaria as a white émigré. During this period, Vaptsarov began embracing left-wing ideas.
He attended high school in Razlog from 1924 to 1926 before enrolling at the Naval Engineering School in Varna , now named after him. There he began writing poetry, publishing his first poem, Towards Bright Ideals, in the student newspaper Borba. As part of his naval training aboard the ship Burgas, he visited Istanbul, Famagusta, Alexandria, Beirut, Port Said and Haifa in 1932. After graduating as a mechanical engineer and officer candidate, he continued writing poetry, participating in theatre productions and literary recitals. His work increasingly reflected maritime and industrial themes.
After graduation, Vaptsarov worked as a stoker and later as a machine technician at the Bulgarian Forest Industry factory in Kocherinovo. He also took part in an amateur theatre troupe and advocated for workers’ rights. In 1934, he married Boyka Vaptsarova.  In 1936, the family moved to Sofia. That same year, the couple’s seven-month-old son, Yonko, died. In 1938, Vaptsarov became a technician at the State Animal Husbandry Service. In January 1940, he published his only poetry collection, Motor Songs.
Later that year, he took part in the so-called Sobolev Action, a campaign collecting signatures in support of a friendship pact between Bulgaria and the Soviet Union. His involvement led to his arrest and internment in Godech. After Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Vaptsarov joined the Central Military Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party, supplying weapons, ammunition and forged documents to members of the communist resistance.
He was arrested in March 1942 and, together with 11 others, was charged under the Law for the Protection of the Nation with assisting an armed underground organization supported by a foreign state, conspiring to overthrow the government, and carrying out subversive activities against Bulgaria’s wartime ally, Germany. Authorities seized a pistol, encrypted notes, propaganda materials and other evidence from his home. During his imprisonment, Vaptsarov was subjected to severe physical torture and confessed to his underground activities. He was sentenced to death on July 23, 1942, and executed the same day.
After the establishment of communist rule in Bulgaria, Vaptsarov was celebrated as a revolutionary poet and anti-fascist activist, and Motor Songs became one of the country’s best-known works of proletarian literature. His poetry was widely published throughout the Soviet bloc. In 1949, the Bulgarian Naval Academy was renamed in his honour. Museums dedicated to his life and work opened in Bansko and Sofia in 1952, and in 1953 he was posthumously awarded the International Peace Prize.
